BENSONHURST — Southern Brooklyn neighborhoods gathered at Seth Low Park on Wednesday for an intimate community memorial to the 9/11 terror attacks. The ceremony was co-sposored by Assemblymember William Colton and City Councilmember Susan Zhuang. Many speakers noted that the sunny skies also reminded them of the clear, crisp morning when the terror attacks unfolded. The speakers asked the attendees to remember the nearly 2,000 persons who died at their workplaces at the World Trade Center, as well as the first-responders who lost their lives trying to rescue others.

They also reminded those gathered of the more than 4,000 9/11 victims who have since died from illnesses caused by exposure to the toxins at Ground Zero. “It is a day which really affects us all very deeply in our hearts and souls. We must never forget the victims, the loved ones who were lost, and we can never allow terrorists to have the opportunity again to do the evil that was done that day,” urged Colton, who recalled two local families who lost their firefighter sons on that day, and another acquaintance, whose wife had died in the attacks.

The hour-long ceremony opened with a color guard from Seth Low Intermediate School. Members of law enforcement and the military shared their recollections as well.
