CITYWIDE — DESPITE SPENDING A RECORD-BREAKING $1 billion on police overtime, response times to the most serious crimes like shooting and assaults have gone up dramatically under Mayor Eric Adams, while enforcement of minor summons like fare evasion have nearly doubled, Councilmember Lincoln Restler (D-33) said Monday in a critique of the FY24 Mayor’s Management Report. While the report stresses recent successes, Restler points out that major felony crimes in New York City are up by over 30% since COVID-19, while response times to serious crimes have reached seven minutes. In addition, New Yorkers are filing more complaints against police officers, and many are dismissed out of hand by the NYPD, Restler said.

The mayor’s report stressed better statistics this year compared to last year, with major felony crime down, driven by a 15% drop in murders and an 18% decrease in shootings. Restler’s comments followed the resignation of NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban after federal investigators subpoenaed his cell phone and the devices of numerous other NYPD officials.
