BELT PARKWAY AND ALBANY — A COLLISION INVOLVING AN NYPD VEHICLE AND A CYCLIST is under investigation by the NY Attorney General’s Office, AG Letitia James announced on Monday. The collision happened around 2:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 13, when a police car collided with a cyclist heading westbound on the eastbound Belt Parkway. According to a police report released on Saturday, first-responders found a male bicyclist lying in the roadway with trauma to the body. EMS transported the cyclist to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn, where he was later pronounced deceased. The NYPD’s Highway District Collision Investigation Squad determined that the cyclist had been riding against the flow of traffic (westbound) in the left lane of the eastbound Belt Parkway when an eastbound driver of a 2017 Dodge Challenger struck him. That driver stayed on the scene, and was later determined to be an off-duty NYPD officer. The deceased cyclist was later identified as Gerardo Santiago De Los Santos, 43, of Midwood.
Pursuant to New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, OSI assesses every incident reported to it where a police officer or a peace officer, including a corrections officer, may have caused the death of a person by an act or omission.
