Engagement & Growth Manager

The engagement and growth manager is a hybrid role, combining traditional reporting with social media and emerging digital reader engagement strategies.

The engagement and growth manager will be our voice on distributed platforms and email newsletter(s). The engagement and growth manager will oversee our social media strategy, pursue platform partnerships, edit our daily newsletter, analyze data and report on performance, and distribute emerging best social media and SEO practices to the team.

Importantly, the engagement and growth manager will ensure that social media is used as a tool to further our reporting — not just its reach. The candidate will seek to use social media, digital tools and the publication’s website to solicit reader engagement that can be used to drive the news cycle with updates, fresh angles and reader responses.

The engagement and growth manager will also be our eyes and ears on the digital lives of Brooklynites, pitching stories about — or derived from — online communities, sub-cultures and trends.

Duties include: 

  • Develop and execute a strategy for our primary social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Reddit). We post about 10x a day to FB and Twitter, 1-2x a day on others.
  • Manage our daily newsletter, and oversee its continued growth
  • Manage crowdsourced reporting initiatives, using online tools to solicit ideas, tips and sources for stories.
  • Distribute social media best practices to the team
  • Identify metrics that define success, and create weekly reports for the Editor-in-Chief
  • Pursue stories, or refer them to the editor for assignment to other team members, about the digital lives of Brooklynites.

The ideal candidate will have 2-5 years experience in digital journalism. The role requires an in-depth knowledge of best practices in social media, newsletter development, community management and digital engagement, and the ideal candidate will have recent experience at a digital-first media company in a social media, engagement or platform growth role.

Candidates should have a strong grasp of Google Docs (including Sheets), WordPress, photo and video editing software and social media platforms, as well as SEO. Candidates should also know how to use Google Analytics, native social analytics, Crowdtangle and Mailchimp. Familiarity with Google Data Studio, Parsely, Chartbeat and other data reporting tools is a plus.

This role does not require a college degree in journalism, but the applicant must demonstrate an ability to do the job, and have a fundamental understanding of news gathering techniques.

Compensation for this role is $45,000 – $65,000 based on experience.
