LOS ANGELES — Go couture or go banana peel: Megami, left, and Nymphia Wind arrive at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday, Sept. 15, 2024, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. Nymphia Wind stole the show, from perhaps even the actors being honored. The person behind the banana peel costume is Taiwanese-American drag queen Leo Tsao.
The Emmy Awards normally take place on a Monday. January’s program was the rescheduled date for the 2023 Emmy Awards after the strikes involving screenwriters and actors. The gala on Sunday was the 2024 lineup of mini-series and made-for-TV movies that aired between June 1, 2023, and May 31, 2024.
LAS VEGAS — Caught by the uppercut: Canelo Alvarez lands a right to Edgar Berlanga in a super middleweight title bout on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2024, in Las Vegas. Alvarez became the undisputed middleweight champion, making this match his eighth title defense by dominating the ring, according to the Los Angeles affiliate of ABC’s Eyewitness News 7. The match also marked Berlanga’s first career loss. The middleweight category in professional boxing falls to those competitors who, in professional boxing, weigh just over 154 lb (70 kg) to 160 lb (73 kg). The middleweight designation reportedly dates back to the 1840s.
By contrast, players in the Lightweight division come in at 130-135 lbs. The heavyweight division range has historically been above 170 lbs. Now, boxers in this range typically weigh over 200 lbs.

RIO DE JANEIRO — A peaceful, joyous way to combat intolerance: Faithful from various religions participate in the Defense of Religious Freedom march at Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday, Sept. 15, 2024. The march, now in its 17th consecutive year, seeks to bring attention to religious intolerance, which has doubled in Brazil over the past six years. Hundreds of men, women and children from more than a dozen faiths, many of them practitioners of Afro-Brazilian religions, participated in the event. Brazil’s recently appointed Minister for Human Rights, Macaé Evaristo, also joined the march. Members of Christian groups, particularly evangelical and neo-Pentecostals, have allegedly launched attacks — including destruction of worship space and expulsion from their homes — against people who practice the more indigenous Afro-Brazilian traditions. Many of the targeted groups believe that the motives for these attacks are more about their race than their beliefs.
“Everything that comes from Black people, everything that comes from people of African origin is devalued; if we are not firm in our faith, we will lose strength,” Vania Vieira, a practitioner of the Afro-Brazilian religion Candomblé, told the National Catholic Reporter.

About 70,000 spectators lined up on the parade’s route on the French capital’s famed avenue that ended on a ring-shaped stage around the Arc de Triomphe monument.
Originally commissioned in 1953, La Patrouille de France is the precision aerobatics demonstration and ambassadorial unit of the French Air and Space Force.
BUENOS AIRES — Not merely tradition but a requirement at all official events: Argentina’s President Javier Milei sings the national anthem as he addresses Congress to present the 2025 budget in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Sunday, Sept. 15, 2024. However, he is facing a showdown with Congress, particularly as he controls less than 15% of the seats, over his austerity measures. Milei’s opponents assert that the needs of Argentina’s citizens are more important than his zero-deficit policy. The majority-opposition party is trying to counter the austerity measure with salary and pension increases.
Milei, for his part, has said he would veto any budget measure that doesn’t align with his agenda.
