FIVE STARS FOR “5TH”

Who doesn’t want to see a great show for under 20 bucks?

The Vangeline Theater, a New York City-based dance company deeply rooted in the Japanese Butoh tradition and owned by dancer and choreographer Vangeline herself, premiers a dancing debut entitled “5th” which consists of five dances that implement the Japanese philosophy of void, water, earth, wind and fire.

The performance includes special appearances by dancers Shoshana Green and Sakie Hachiya and violinist/vocalist, Ysanne Spevack, of the Smashing Pumpkins. The show will be held at Triskelion Art’s Aldous Theater, 118 North 11th Street, third floor, February 7 through 9 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15.

CELEBRATE IN COLOR

Come celebrate the New Year with dancer and choreographer Nai-Ni Chen and her dance company at the Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts at Brooklyn College on January 26at 3 p.m.

With colorful wardrobes and graceful dance movements that exhibit the Chinese traditional arts and culture, The Lunar New Year Celebration will visually take you on a journey you won’t forget.

POETRY AND PURPOSE

Witness the Welfare Poets at Medgar Evers College (MEC) on Monday, February 10, to celebrate Black History Month. They will perform music that reflects the college’s theme for the holiday: “Reclaiming Our Ancestral Legacy through Courage, Strength and Fortitude.”

The band plays all over the world in the hope of using cultural music forms such as Hip hop, Jazz, Bomba and Afro-Caribbean percussion to increase the awareness of violence and oppression.

Their performances will be followed by Q and A interactions from the audience.

The show will begin at 10:30 a.m. at 1650 Bedford Avenue in the Founder’s Auditorium.  Admission is free.
