Beaches, pools close for the season next weekend
CITYWIDE — JUST TWO WEEKENDS are left for water-lovers this summer — the city’s beaches will close for the season after next Sunday, Sept. 8, meaning that lifeguards will no longer be on duty and swimming will be officially prohibited. Jacob Riis Beach in the Rockaways, a part of Gateway National Park, will not have lifeguards after Sept. 2, Labor Day. The city’s large and medium-sized pools will also close after Sept. 8, while mini-pools will close after Labor Day. This has been a dangerous year for swimmers, with several drowning accidents at the city’s beaches leading to demands for more lifeguard coverage, as the city struggles to find eligible workers. Mayor Adams earlier this month announced that lifeguards would stay on duty until 8 p.m. during heat waves, to protect New Yorkers trying to cool off in the ocean.
Beaches were closed last weekend through Tuesday due to fears of strong rip currents, waves and wind gusts from Hurricane Ernesto, but the risk has passed, although rip currents are always a danger in the Atlantic.
