NORWAY — FORMER LONG ISLAND UNIVERSITY STUDENT and adventurous archaeologist Karla Dana died Tuesday when a replica Viking ship she was crewing hit a storm and capsized off the coastal town of Stad, Norway, according to sources including NBC. Her body was recovered Wednesday. Dana was sailing on what was dubbed a “Legendary Viking Voyage.” The other five crew members were rescued from a life raft by helicopter, but Dana became caught beneath the boat and drowned. At 29, she was a world traveler and member of the Explorers Club, and the youngest member of the crew. While at LIU she co-founded a tech startup focused on restoring WiFi connections in disaster areas. In her early 20s she turned to ethnographic field research, which included living with an indigenous tribe in Costa Rica, according to her LinkedIn.

“Our journey is a tribute to Naddodd, the Viking who discovered Iceland, and a testament to the enduring spirit of exploration and adventure,” Expedition Leader Andy Fitze wrote before the voyage. “The crew, including two esteemed Explorers Club members, will navigate the challenging North Sea, relying on teamwork, courage, and maybe a few good luck charms.”✰✰✰
