SAVANNAH — The face of future activism: People listen as Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris speaks at a campaign rally in Savannah, Ga., Thursday, Aug. 29, 2024. Harris and her vice presidential running mate, Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, gave the first joint interview of their campaign on Thursday night with CNN’s Dana Bash. During the interview, Harris defended her shift toward the center on issues such as fracking and the handling of illegal border crossings. Although Harris had previously said she supported a ban on the controversial energy-extraction procedure called hydrofracking, she reversed her position. Swing states like Pennsylvania, which she hopes to win, depend on hydrofracking.

Upstate New York’s Southern Tier, which borders Pennsylvania, banned high-volume hydrofracking more than a decade ago.

SPAIN — You’ve heard of red sauce restaurants — well, this is a red sauce town: Revelers throw tomatoes at each other during the annual “Tomatina” tomato fight fiesta in the village of Bunol near Valencia, Spain, Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2024. Held on the last Wednesday of August each year, the fight is a chance to dispose of those over-ripe tomatoes. The acid from the tomatoes also cleans the ground, albeit with help from fire trucks. The participants are left to clean up on their own. The Tomatina’s origins were quite by chance and date back to 1945 when someone accidentally fell into a parade, knocking everything over. The angry townspeople retaliated by throwing tomatoes.

The tradition became so popular that Spain’s leader, Francisco Franco, actually banned it during the 1950s because the custom bore “no religious significance.” That did not stop the tomato-hurlers.

WISCONSIN — Unique to our time — untrammeled, uncountable recordings of history being made: Republican presidential nominee former President Donald Trump greets supporters at a town hall with former Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, Thursday, Aug. 29, 2024, in La Crosse, Wis. However, a group of officials and staffers from four past Republican administrations this week endorsed Democrat Kamala Harris for President, warning Americans that a second term for GOP nominee Donald Trump is “simply untenable” and “will hurt real, everyday people.”

The group included staffers for former President George H.W. Bush and his son, former President George W. Bush, the late Arizona Sen. John McCain and Utah Sen. Mitt Romney, who have called on their fellow “moderate Republicans and conservative independents” to join them in supporting the Harris/Walz ticket.
