Subpar turf delays home-opener for Brooklyn Football Club
CONEY ISLAND — A TURF ISSUE DELAYED THE INAUGURAL HOME-OPENER OF BROOKLYN FC, and the newly-formed professional soccer team will have to wait for its grand debut at Maimonides Park until the field is up to standard. The team was previously scheduled to play against the Carolina Ascent at Maimonides Park, which Brooklyn FC splits with the minor league baseball team, the Cyclones. Brooklyn FC’s website has no indication of the specific issues with the apparently finicky turf at Maimonides, only saying that, during the installation of the soccer field the team “identified deficiencies that have rendered the field surface unplayable.” It also has not announced when they will be able to kick-off at the stadium, but Aug. 31’s game against the Ascent is “postponed,” according to their official schedule. Brooklyn FC indicated in a press statement on Aug. 28, that ticket holders for the Aug. 31 game need not worry: “Our next home match will now be on Sept. 25th. All season ticket holders do not need to take any action, as their tickets will be good for the makeup date, which will be announced at a later date.”
Maimonides Park was opened in 2001 as KeySpan Park, named at the time for the sponsorship of KeySpan Energy (now National Grid), a major gas and electric utility company. That year, the Brooklyn Cyclones minor league baseball team, affiliated with the NY Mets, made its debut. Maimonides Park is now split into sections for baseball and soccer.
