Out of the shadow

This week’s unsung hero is John Gilhooley, a true Bay Ridge treasure. John has contributed decades of service to our community as he spent countless hours preparing baskets for the needy as past vice president of the Bayforts.

John is a past leader of the Cathedral Club and he is also actively involved in the Bay Ridge American Legion Post. He helps to raise funds to benefit military families at Fort Hamilton, and is always willing to toss his hat into the ring whenever called.

John retired recently after many years at Con Edison. He was well known for helping the Bay Ridge public, especially seniors who had billing or other problems. John is always in the background, doing much to help maintain the quality of life we enjoy.

Congratulations to Mike and Eileen Long as they celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. We join their children and grandchildren in celebrating with them, and wish them many more healthy and happy ones.

Best wishes to Jim McHugh who has been chosen as 2014 Bay Ridge Community Council Civic Award winner. Jim does great work with many organizations including the Boy Scouts, Little League, Relay for Life and community events.

I would like personally to welcome Marc Hibsher to The Home Reporter and Spectator family. Marc brings great talent and skills to this new position. We are happy to have him.

UNSUNG FOLK REMEDIES: Apple Cider Vinegar for pets

If your dog has itchy skin, constantly washes his feet, has an ear odor and is picky about his food, apple cider vinegar may help. For itchy skin, place in a spray bottle, part the hair and spray. Skin eruptions should dry up within 24 hours.

If the skin is already broken, dilute with water in equal amounts and spray to avoid excessive burning. If he is a picky eater, place a few drops in in his food twice per day. Large dogs can take half a teaspoon mixed in their food to help boost appetite.

Please consult your doctor if you are on any medication.
