More shark-watch drones coming to Jones Beach this summer
JONES BEACH — FIVE MORE SHARK-WATCH drones are joining the existing fleet of 17, bringing the total to 22 at Jones Beach this summer, Gov. Kathy Hochul said at a press conference at the beach on Thursday. “We’re also going to be training 11 additional pilots,” Hochul said. “So, by this summer, we’ll have over 40 people trained in how to deploy the drones.” Park police will also be getting a bigger drone with thermal imaging, laser range finding, and the ability to fly in bad weather and drop a flotation device, Hochul said.
At the presser, Hochul also announced various safe swimming initiatives, including a $5 million lifeguard grant program and $100 million to revitalize and transform the abandoned Jones Beach East Bathhouse. NYC beaches open Saturday, May 25.
