BENSONHURST — A FIRST-OF-A-KIND EVENT REFLECTING BROOKLYN’S blended cultures celebrated both Jewish Heritage Month and Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month. City Councilmember Susan Zhuang hosted the joint celebration, which brought together leadership from the Jewish Community Relations Council-NY, including its CEO Mark Treyger, formerly City Councilmember (47th District). Also taking part were Center for Shared Society Rabbi Bob Kaplan and Chair Cheryl Fishbein. Event partners included JCRC-NY, the Marks JCH of Bensonhurst, and the UJA Federation of New York. The celebration, featuring a breakfast, live music, an award ceremony, lunch, and other programs, also honored Sin Sin Chang, Xia Li Zhen, Neli Salniker, Eduard Vasilyev, and Nora Polisar with the Community & Cultural Leadership Award.
“Asian Americans and Jewish Americans are not new to America. They helped build and shape our great country and our great city,” said Treyger, expressing appreciation for the new partnership. “We look forward to celebrating our beautiful cultures and sharing common experiences — and we look forward to continuing this new and wonderful tradition for years and generations to come.”

Brooklyn Boro
View MoreNew York City’s most populous borough, Brooklyn, is home to nearly 2.6 million residents. If Brooklyn were an independent city it would be the fourth largest city in the United States. While Brooklyn has become the epitome of ‘cool and hip’ in recent years, for those that were born here, raised families here and improved communities over the years, Brooklyn has never been ‘uncool’.
