CONEY ISLAND — ASSAULTING A RETAIL WORKER is now a felony, Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton (D-Coney Island, north Staten Island) announced Friday. She was joined by members of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce and other local merchant associations at the 1716 Mermaid Ave Deli and Grill in Coney Island to celebrate the passage of her bill, which was incorporated into the 2024 New York State budget in April. It elevates the offense of assaulting a retail worker to a Class E Felony, punishable by up to 4 years in prison. In 2023, Jamal Sawaid, owner of the deli, was brutally attacked while working behind the counter of his business.

“Retail workers are really the backbone of so many communities, and they deserve to feel safe when they clock into work,” Scarcella-Spanton said in a release.
