STATEWIDE — CITING “SHOCKING” DROWNING numbers and a shortage of lifeguards, Gov. Kathy Hochul said at a press conference at Jones Beach Thursday that New York state will be spending $150 million this year to implement the New York SWIMS program, which will help underserved communities build or improve swimming facilities and make more money available for lifeguards.

“These numbers are shocking. And behind every tragedy is a heartbroken family, siblings, parents, grandparents,” Hochul said. Beaches open in New York City on Saturday.

“We’re also going to have free sunscreen” at state park pools, Hochul added. “I don’t want to see sunburns. I’ve burned enough. I have Irish skin; I burn like crazy. So, get the suntan lotion out there.”
