BEDFORD-STUYVESANT — START TREATMENT & RECOVERY CENTERS, Inc. (START NY) on Wednesday, May 22, celebrated the unveiling of Dr. Beny J. Primm Way, on the corner of Waverly Avenue and Fulton Street in Bedford-Stuyvesant, to honor the life and work of the organization’s founder. Primm was a widely respected physician, a pioneer in substance abuse treatment and AIDS prevention, and an advocate for public health policy. First Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright, Councilmember Crystal Hudson, advocates and community leaders joined START NY at a street naming ceremony which began with remarks from START NY Chief Executive Officer Jonnel Doris, followed by an invocation prayer led by the Reverend Clinton Miller of Brown Memorial Baptist Church. City Councilmember Crystal Hudson presented a proclamation and delivered remarks. Dr. Primm’s family was present for the celebration and taken on a private tour of the first START facility at Fulton Street following the celebration.

The renaming of Waverly Avenue and Fulton Street to Dr. Beny J Primm Way is the result of a close partnership between Councilmember Hudson’s office, Community Board, local businesses and residences. The naming demarks the location where Dr. Primm founded the first of six START NY clinics 55 years ago.
