A Crown Heights man was sentenced to 15 years in prison for fatally shooting a 17-year-old girl at a party in East New York. Javone Duncan, 24, was convicted of manslaughter in March for the 2022 incident.

“This senseless shooting took the life of a young woman with a bright future,” said District Attorney Eric Gonzalez. “Today’s sentence holds the defendant accountable for his actions and is a measure of justice for the victim’s grieving family.”

According to the evidence presented at trial, on Oct. 26, 2022, at 10:55 p.m. at 790 Elderts Lane, Duncan, after being rejected by the victim, Raelynn Cameron, shot her once in the chest. He then fled the scene without attempting to assist her.

Witnesses testified that Duncan had earlier pointed the same gun at another young woman at the party, turning the safety on and off. Despite warnings about the danger, he persisted in his reckless behavior.

Duncan was arrested later that night. He was convicted of second-degree manslaughter and two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon on March 25. Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Heidi Cesare handed down the 15-year sentence.
