The International Section of the New York State Bar Association will give the Distinction in International Law Award, its highest honor, to the co-chair of its chapter in Ukraine — attorney Anna Ogrenchuck.

Ogrenchuk will be honored at the association’s Annual Meeting that will take place in Manhattan on Jan. 18 to 24.

“At a time of personal struggle and her homeland under attack, Anna Ogrenchuk is leading the fight to hold the Russian government and its leaders accountable,” said NYSBA president Sherry Levin Wallach. “She is a tireless leader for justice and the rule of law. I am proud to serve alongside her as bar presidents and leaders of our profession.”

Ogrenchuk is the president of the Ukrainian Bar Association and has helped create a coalition of law groups that have pressured the United Nations to investigate Russia for alleged war crimes as the country continues its invasion of Ukraine.

The NYSBA signed a memorandum of understanding with the Ukraine Bar Association in Dec. 2021, and less than two months later it led to lawyers from the U.S., Ukraine, and Poland working together in a NYSBA Ukraine Task Force.

That task force has played a role in helping refugees safely escape violence, and has collected evidence of war crimes while arguing for an international tribunal to investigate Russian aggression.

The Annual Meeting will take place at the New York Hilton Midtown. The award ceremony to honor Ogrenchuk will occur virtually on Mon. Jan. 23 at 12:15 P.M.
