BANKNOTE BLDG., BRONX — A ‘FIRST-IN-THE-NATION BILL to make it illegal for New York state-registered charities to fund violations of international law in Israel was scheduled to be re-launched on Monday morning, May 20, with several Brooklyn lawmakers joining Congressmember Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-14) and Sen. Jabari Brisport (D-25) of Brooklyn, the bill’s sponsor in the State Senate. The bill responds to what its drafters say is a well-documented phenomenon of U.S.-based, and particularly NYS-registered front groups funding what a growing number of Americans say are illegal Israeli settlements and war crimes. The bill’s sponsors say these non-profits are masquerading as charities and thus enjoying tax breaks from NY State. They say that over $60 million annually goes from “charities” registered in New York to violent Israeli settler organizations.

Other elected officials and organizations that planned to take part were Brooklyn Assemblymembers Emily Gallagher, Phara Souffrant Forrest and Marcela Mitaynes; the Assembly’s bill sponsor Zohran K. Mamdani of Queens; City Councilmembers Chi Ossé, Tiffany Cabán, Shahana Hanif, and Sandy Nurse, all of Brooklyn; and United Auto Workers (UAW) Region 9A Director Brandon Mancilla, Jews for Racial and Economic Justice (JFREJ), UAW members.
