A Bedford-Stuyvesant man has been sentenced to up to 10 years in prison for causing the death of his girlfriend’s four-month-old daughter.

The defendant, Ricardo Price, who is 26 years old, pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter in April. Price received his sentence of 3 1/3 to 10 years in prison on Monday from Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Donald Leo.

“Royalty Kemp was a precious infant entrusted by her mother to the defendant’s care,” said District Attorney Eric Gonzalez. “Instead of ensuring the child’s safety, he caused head injuries so severe she died. With today’s sentence, the defendant has been held responsible for his horrific actions. Our hearts continue to be with the child’s mother and loved ones as they grieve her tragic loss.”

According to evidence presented in court, on June 22, 2021, Price was babysitting Royalty Kemp in an apartment at 93 Lewis Ave. The baby’s mother had left her in Price’s care for the night. When Royalty began to cry, Price shook his leg repeatedly, causing her to bounce off his knee and strike her head on a video game controller.

The following day, Royalty’s mother returned and noticed her daughter was lethargic and unable to eat. That afternoon, the baby became unresponsive. She was taken to Woodhull Medical Center, where doctors diagnosed a skull fracture. She was then transferred to Bellevue Hospital, where she died on July 2, 2021.

An autopsy by the Office of the New York City Medical Examiner revealed the cause of death was abusive head trauma, with multiple recent injuries, including skull fractures and hemorrhaging in the brain and spinal cord.
