New Utrecht students win 11th District’s Congressional app challenge
NEW UTRECHT — FOUR STUDENTS FROM NEW UTRECHT HIGH SCHOOL have won the 2024 Congressional App Challenge for New York’s 11th Congressional District that Congressmember Nicole Malliotakis sponsored last year, her office announced on Thursday, Jan. 9.
The 11th graders — Chrystopher Guevara, Stephanie Reinozo, Jaylynn Perez, and Victoria Sanchez — developed the “Makers of Tomorrow” app, which allows users to create accessible STEM projects at home using everyday materials. Users can choose a project from one of three subjects: physics, chemistry, or geoscience. Upon finishing and clicking the “complete project” button, the user will see a sticker such as “Great Job!” pop up. Users can also upload a photo of a project to a public album, where others can comment, like, and share. An introduction to the app is available on YouTube.
The winners will be displayed in the Capitol Building, along with on the House’s website and the Congressional App Challenge’s website for one year. The Congressional App Challenge is an annual nationwide competition that the Internet Education Foundation sponsors to inspire students to explore STEM, coding and computer science through hands-on practice.
“I have been proud to host this challenge for high school students in our community, providing them with a platform to showcase their creativity and technical skills while encouraging them to explore STEM fields,” said Malliotakis. “I look forward to seeing how these students will continue to excel and contribute to our community and country.”
