The Brooklyn Brandeis Society, in collaboration with the Chabad Tzedek Society, hosted its annual Chanukah luncheon at the Brooklyn Bar Association on Dec. 12, bringing together the Jewish legal community in a spirited celebration.

The event was not only a festive gathering but also doubled as a toy drive for hospitalized children during the holidays.

Rabbi Eliyahu Raskin of the Chabad Tzedek Society shared a touching story about his great-grandfather’s initiative to provide toys for hospitalized children, inspiring the group’s ongoing tradition of spreading joy during the holidays.

“To this day, the group collects toys for Jewish children and non-Jewish children throughout the holidays,” Rabbi Raskin recounted.

Jeffrey Miller, president of the Brooklyn Brandeis Society, spoke about the importance of upholding factual integrity in legal discourse and the Jewish connection to Israel.

“I don’t want to get too political, but there is something worth speaking about — everyone has the right to opinions, the right to arguments, but you don’t have the right to facts,” Miller said. “As lawyers, when we prepare papers, there is a facts section and an argument section and the two are different for a reason. Only if you have a common understanding of the actual facts can you engage in an honest argument.

“In modern times what you are hearing often is that the Jews are new to Israel, that Israel is a new creation,” Miller added. “Hanukkah reminds us that 2,200 years ago, for a holiday continuing to this day, the Jews have had a connection to Israel.”

Miller also acknowledged the society’s leadership for their efforts in making the organization meaningful and reminding others of its significance.

The Brooklyn Brandeis Society itself, formed to promote camaraderie and exchange of ideas among its members, plays a vital role in fostering an understanding of Jewish history, culture, and teachings.

Its mission extends to promoting justice and due process in legal institutions, enhancing understanding of law and legal ethics, and actively engaging with other bar associations in New York. The society stands firm against anti-Semitism, racism, and discrimination, reflecting its commitment to uphold and advocate for justice and equality in the legal community.

The Brooklyn Brandeis Society’s Chanukah luncheon was a vibrant celebration of the Festival of Lights, welcoming guests from diverse faiths to partake in traditional festivities. This convivial gathering offered a delightful array of latkes, sufganiyot, and kosher food, fostering a warm, inclusive atmosphere.
