ALBANY — GOV. KATHY HOCHUL WARNED Thursday that President Trump’s threatened executive order dismantling the U.S. Department of Education would have a devastating effect on New York schools.
“What does this mean for a place like New York? Five billion dollars in cuts. We’re talking about billions of dollars lost in Pell Grants, money for kids with disabilities, programs that are helping our kids in rural areas, and mental health,” she said during a virtual press conference with education leaders.
Hochul urged teachers, parents and students to “use your voices and stand up and scream from the mountaintops. This must stop.” Hochul also charged that the Trump administration is slashing funds in order to fund tax breaks for billionaires and his “buddies at Mar-a-Lago.”
CNN reported Thursday that White House officials have prepared an executive order directing Education Secretary Linda McMahon to begin the process of dismantling the department, but would not be signing it on Thursday. Dismantling the nation’s Education Department was a top priority of the far-right Project 2025, CNN said.
