BROOKLYN HEIGHTS TO CLINTON HILL — A VIRTUAL INFORMATION SESSION on Wednesday, July 22 aims to help Brooklyn Community District 2 residents understand the rollout of the city Department of Sanitation’s new Empire Bins, which are now being introduced within this area, which spans from Brooklyn Heights to parts of Clinton Hill.
Empire Bins are on-street sealed trash containers for larger apartment buildings and schools, and are assigned to specific properties. They are opened with key cards and emptied using the Department of Sanitation’s new side-loading collection trucks. Their installation is being rolled out incrementally around the community boards, as the city works toward 100% containerization of trash.
Empire Bins are assigned to properties based on the number of residential units. Larger residential properties – those with 31 or more residential units – are required to obtain these bins.
The online session, scheduled for July 22 at 6 p.m., as well as a website dedicated to the Empire Bins, will provide more information. Registration and opt-in for smaller buildings is available through the end of July.
Sanitation is partnering with Councilmember Lincoln Restler ([email protected]) to launch a pilot program allowing buildings with 10 or fewer units to join together so they can participate in the Empire Bin program.

SUNSET PARK — “As a resident of Marine Park, one of the great surprises I found biking around Industry City and visiting Japan Village was to discover Bush Terminal Park. I continue to be amazed at the serene hideaways that the city offers in some of the busiest places — and, still, with an iconic view.”

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS — ‘A miracle that no one was killed …’ That’s what neighbors are saying about the collapse of the Hotel St. George marquee. Shown in this photograph are workmen beginning the removal and repair of the historic, old neon sign at the corner, referencing a relic of Brooklyn Heights’ past: the St. George Hotel.

ATLANTIC AVENUE — Exhausted shopper with cluster of bags and goods from mall at Boerum Place stops to look at huge construction site across the street. “Is that REALLY going to be a jail??” Her male companion is reassuring, “Nothing like Rikers … this is 21st Century.”
BROOKLYN HEIGHTS — Overheard in line at one of most popular pastry outlets on Montague Street: “Hope I can get them into a camp …” A mother with two pre-schoolers in tow was showing a friend the Dodge Y flyer for Healthy Kids Day on Saturday, April 18.
