Brooklyn Museum to cut 40-plus employees amid growing deficit

PROSPECT HEIGHTS — THE BROOKLYN MUSEUM plans to lay off more than 40 employees due to a projected $10 million deficit, the New York Times confirmed Friday. That would amount to 10-13% of the museum’s workforce.
Senior leadership will also see their pay slashed, while exhibitions will be reduced, and some events will likely be canceled, the Times reported. Local 1502, a branch of the District Council 37 union representing museum workers, claims the museum failed to inform them of the planned cuts in advance, potentially violating their contract, Hyperallergic reported Thursday.
The National Labor Relations Board has yet to respond to District Council 37. President Donald Trump fired the NLRB’s general counsel and a Democratic member of the board last month, halting most of the agency’s operations, Hyperallergic said.
