BENSONHURST — A FOOD OUTREACH PROGRAM IN BENSONHURST has received funding from City Councilmember Susan Zhuang, – who joined Reaching Out Community Services at their grand opening on Wednesday, Nov. 13. Reaching-Out Community Services is a non-profit organization that has, for the past three decades, provided emergency food and social services to area residents. The grand opening is at the 18th Avenue location. Reaching Out’s previous food outreach program at a New Utrecht Avenue location had to close for lack of funds. Zhuang allocated funding for the organization so they could launch this program when food cost is at an all-time high. Zhuang and Reaching Out Community Services will be welcoming to this program new community members who struggle with food insecurity. Those wishing to receive the services sign up as program members.

Reaching-Out Community Services, established in 1989, became the first client choice supermarket-style food pantry in 1996, enabling the recipients to receive food in a dignified manner. People register to participate in the program. Today, Reaching-Out operates several programs, including a farm-to-table vegetable distribution, a Digital Client Choice Food Pantry, programs for the homeless, annual school supply and holiday drives and social services.
