LOS ANGELES — LEGENDARY GOSPEL SINGER CISSY HOUSTON, the mother of Whitney Houston, has passed away at the age of 91, the New York Amsterdam News and other sources reported. Her decades-long career in music left an indelible mark, both as a member of The Sweet Inspirations and as a solo artist, influencing generations of artists and her family. A two-time Grammy winner, Houston was renowned for her work with music icons like Elvis Presley and Aretha Franklin.

At the time of Cissy Houston’s death at her New Jersey home on Monday, daughter Pat released a press statement, “Mother Cissy has been a strong and towering figure in our lives. A woman of deep faith and conviction, who cared greatly about family, ministry and community. Her more than seven-decade career in music and entertainment will remain at the forefront of our hearts.”

Cissy Houston’s daughter, Whitney Houston, who became the most-awarded musical artist in history, died in 2012 at 48. A medical examiner determined her death to be accidental death, attributing her demise both to drowning, cardiac problems and substance use. Whitney won six Grammy Awards, including an Album of the Year, and a grand total of 400 music awards.
