Williamsburg gets its own ‘down under’ BQ Flea next month
WILLIAMSBURG — HIPSTER MECCA WILLIAMSBURG IS FOLLOWING IN DUMBO’S HIPPIE FOOTSTEPS with a new flea market. Known as BQ Flea, the market is receiving support from the NYC Department of Transportation with the goal of reconnecting parts of the neighborhood that the Brooklyn Queens Expressway divided, starting in the 1940s when urban planner and power broker Robert Moses sought to link Williamsburg with the Manhattan Bridge. The same people who organize Brooklyn Flea are also running the market, which will be open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays, Oct. 6, 13, 20 and 27.
Brooklyn Flea and Greenpointers report that the market will be set underneath the BQE, along Meeker Avenue between Union and Lorimer streets, and will allow vendors, including community members and small businesses, to sell items at an affordable rate. For the first time, sellers will be able to sell directly from their vehicles, inspired by English “carboot” sales, according to a press statement from Brooklyn Flea organizers. Applications for vendors are also being accepted via Brooklyn Flea’s website.
Local artists have also been using the area as a canvas for art installations.
