Fort Hamilton Army Base commemorates tragedy of Sept. 11, 2001
FORT HAMILTON — A COMMEMORATION OF THE SEPT. 11, 2001, ATTACKS will be observed a day in advance at Brooklyn’s own military base, the U.S. Army Garrison. The garrison will host its 9/11 Commemoration Observance on Tuesday, Sept 10, at 10 a.m. by the Fort Hamilton Memorial on the grounds of the Community Club, starting with a brief ceremony for the base community. A wreath laying will memorialize and pay tribute to the almost 3,000 people killed on that date, when hijackers flew planes into both towers of the World Trade Center, and a portion of the Pentagon in Washington, DC. A fourth plane went down in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers banded together to abort the hijacking in process aboard that flight. Guest speaker is Major General Kris Belanger, the commanding general of 99th Regional Division out of Fort Dix, N.J. Maj. Gen. Belanger is with the U.S. Army Reserve Readiness Divisions, according to the USAR’s website.
The cornerstone of the coastal defense force was set in 1825; the first garrison flag was raised in 1831, according to the army base’s website. Today, the garrison is home to 573 Active Duty members, 942 family members, 700 civilians and 880 National Guard and Reserve personnel.
