PROSPECT PARK — THE PURSLANE CAFÉ will start offering sustainably sourced food and coffee daily, as well as cocktails and beverages on select evenings, starting July 4, the Prospect Park Alliance announced on Thursday, June 27. The emphasis is on sustainability and protecting the environment, as the catering company that runs Purslane is a New York-based sustainable hospitality firm, The Oberon Group. Purslane Cafe is a physical extension of Oberon’s catering arm, which produces events at the Boathouse and Prospect Park Picnic House, and which has gained acclaim as New York’s first zero-waste, carbon-neutral catering company. Purslane Café will feature a menu of coffee drinks and healthy food options like sandwiches and pastries and frittatas daily, open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. with outdoor seating, and will carry only sustainable, recyclable and compostable products. Wine, beer and summer cocktails will also be available for special evenings.

The café is named for an ancient herb that dates back to the Biblical Babylonian region. Often an ingredient in salads, purslane is a nutty herb rich in several vitamins and nutrients.
