BROOKLYN HEIGHTS AND SYRACUSE — ONE OF THE AWARDS PRESENTED at The Association of New York State Young Republican Clubs’ conference in late July was named after a successful mayor of 19th-century Brooklyn. The 2024 Young Republican Leadership Conference, being held July 26-28 in Syracuse,  will bring together representatives from more than 30 county chapters for a weekend of training workshops, policy education, and networking opportunities. The conference will also feature the 6th Annual Teddy Roosevelt Dinner on the evening of July 27th. Named to honor the legacy of former New York Governor and the nation’s 26th president, Theodore Roosevelt, this annual awards dinner recognizes prominent elected officials and youth activists who have supported the Young Republicans’ mission to recruit, train, and elect a new generation of Republican leaders throughout the state. But another famous New Yorker is the namesake of the Seth Low Municipal Official of the Year Award being presented at the dinner. Low was Brooklyn’s mayor from 1882-85.

A progressive reformer within the Republican Party, Low was again elected mayor, this time of New York City, and served from 1902-03. Low, who grew up at 3 Pierrepont Place in Brooklyn Heights, also served as president of Columbia University between his two mayoral stints.
