CITYWIDE — NYC DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION OFFICIALS are considering a number of ways to reduce class size to meet a new state mandate, and one strategy under consideration is virtual learning, education publication Chalkbeat reported. In a plan released this week, DOE suggested that some students could “receive regular remote instruction, potentially reducing the overall impacts on space in schools.” Virtual learning would be just one option, the city added. Under the law, academic classes must not exceed between 20 and 25 students, depending on the grade level.

More than 300,000 students in high-need schools are in overcrowded classrooms, according to a UFT study reported by City & State in November 2023.
