Those who have visited the Brooklyn Botanic Garden will appreciate the magic and whimsical beauty it brings to Brooklyn. Long touted as an oasis in the middle of Brooklyn, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s Sakura Matsuri Festival (cherry blossom festival) is one of the highlights of Brooklyn’s springtime season.

While the park is temporarily closed to visitors, the Postal Service is proud to announce that postal customers can now send letters around the world showcasing the splendor of the BBG. Available online starting May 13, Brooklyn Botanic Garden will travel the world as a postage stamp.

The BBG sits prominently on the top left of a new stamp series titled American Gardens, featured alongside nine other stamps that celebrate botanic, country estate and municipal gardens in different states.

“I am proud to say that Brooklyn has one of the most magnificent gardens in the country,” said Brooklyn Postmaster Eddie Banner. “We are proud to deliver to such a respected institution, and Brooklyn residents can take pride in knowing their beloved garden is featured on a postage stamp. Sadly, we cannot visit the park at the moment, so this is a wonderful way to honor and enjoy it.”

The Winterthur Garden, located in Delaware, was originally designated to host the first-day ceremony for the American Gardens issue, but like many of gardens featured on the new issue, the Winterthur Garden is currently closed because of the coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak.

The vignettes are photographs of areas within the gardens taken between 1996 and 2014 by Allen Rokach. Postal Service art director Ethel Kessler designed the issue.

Customers can purchase these stamps online at USPS.com and at select retail locations starting May 13.
