Construction of the long-awaited elevator at the 86th Street R train station will begin this month, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA).

The station, located on 86th Street and Fourth Avenue will remain open for regular weekday service during the construction, but MTA officials said to expect closures on some weeknights and weekends.

The elevator will be built near the station entrance on the northeast corner of 86th Street and Fourth Avenue.

More than 12,000 weekday customers use the station every day.

The $17.9 million project actually calls for the installation of two elevators; one that will take riders from the street to the mezzanine and the other going from the mezzanine to the subway platform.

Under the project, the MTA will renovate the station and install new handrails, turnstiles, Braille signage and platform panels.

NYC Transit President Andy Byford said the elevators will make the station more accessible.

“I have said from Day One of my tenure that improving accessibility is one of my four top priorities, and I’m pleased to see this station moving us ahead on that goal,” Byford said.

The elevator is expected to be operational by 2020.
