THE LEDE: Happy hump day, Brooklyn! Brooklyn Heights residents are wary of BQE repairs, a Montague Street landlord gets shot down by the Landmarks Preservation Commission, and a new Bolivian restaurant is coming to Gotham Market. Plus, the city says not to flush the toilet during rainstorms, we share the 17 best burrito joints in NYC, and a small town in Indiana has a deep, dark secret. Finally, President Trump reneges on his promise to create gun control, a bus carrying high school students falls into a ravine in Alabama, and Arizona state superintendent says her teachers can legally carry guns in school.

IMPRINT: Shia LaBeouf “confronts himself and his demons” on the April cover of Esquire.

~HEIGHTS RESIDENTS FEAR BQE REHAB WILL BRING REPLAY OF BROOKLYN BRIDGE DISRUPTION: The residents of 140 Cadman Plaza West, a Mitchell-Lama co-op in Brooklyn Heights, have complained for years about the 24/7 construction noise and pollution inflicted on them by the Brooklyn Bridge repair project. Residents have reported sleepless nights and health problems from 2 a.m. jackhammering, construction vehicle commotion and backup beeping — with little relief from the city’s Department of Transportation, they say. The disruption experienced by the residents of 140 Cadman Plaza West could be repeated on a major scale across Brooklyn Heights and nearby neighborhoods during the upcoming seven-year, $1.8 billion BQE rehab project unless proper mitigation measures are put into effect, local representatives say. “This is going to require a level of public engagement we have not even contemplated for any other project, commensurate with the complexity and scale of the project,” Councilmember Stephen Levin told the Eagle. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~LANDMARKS AGENCY SHOOTS DOWN BIG ADDITION TO 135 MONTAGUE ST.: Back to the drawing board, sir! The city Landmarks Preservation Commission shot down longtime landlord Eli Dweck’s plan to build an eye-catching two-story addition on top of an elegant limestone Montague Street retail building. The purpose of 135 Montague St.’s proposed makeover was to turn it into a mixed-use residential and commercial building with eight apartments. At a public hearing Tuesday, Commission ChairwomanMeenakshi Srinivasan questioned whether “an enlargement of this scale is appropriate in Brooklyn Heights.” Later, she said the proposed addition would be “overwhelming” to the original two-story, 30-foot-tall building, which was constructed in the 1920s on the site of a playground. “It’s all about proportion,” Srinivasan said. She told project architect Walter Marin the commission would be open to a smaller, shorter addition. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~NEW BOLIVIAN RESTAURANT OPENING IN GOTHAM MARKET: After Gotham Market at The Ashland axed four of its six tenants this year, Bolivian Llama Party is hoping to make it under the swing and onto the market floor for its new location. The Fort Greene market’s owner previously said the ousted vendors needed to change “based on feedback from the community and neighborhood.” Brothers AlexPatrick and David Oropeza are ready to take on that challenge with their expanded menu that offers chicken salteña, three-pork and brisket sandwiches and fried queso blanco, among other options. Bolivian Llama Party developed a cult following after opening in the Smorgasburg market. (via Eater New York)

~CITY SAYS DON’T FLUSH THE TOILET DURING STORMS: The city’s Department of Environmental Protection wants Brooklyn and Queens residents to wait to use their water during heavy rainstorms as part of their new campaign, “Wait….” The reason for the potential annoyance is that rainwater runoff and household sewage flow through the same old underground pipes. When heavy rain comes down, the overflow then runs into nearby bodies of water instead of water treatment plants. “Join the movement that’s improving our community and keeping our waterways clean for wildlife,” a DEP brochure reads. “We’ll send you a free text message alert when there’s a heavy storm and another when it’s all clear.” The city agency suggests residents should wait on laundry, showering, washing dishes and flushing the toilet. (via 6sqft)

EAGLE SPORTS: At this point last season, the Islanders were tied with Toronto for the final available playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with 13 games to play. They proceeded to go 8-4-1, including a regular season-ending six-game winning streak, only to fall a single point shy of the Maple Leafs for the East’s second wild card. It will likely take an even more torrid finish for New York to make some noise in the postseason race this year. Despite ending a season-high eight-game losing streak (0-4-4) with Sunday’s 5-2 win at Calgary, the Isles (30-29-10) find themselves eight points back of New Jersey for the final available playoff spot with 13 games left. “We know we’re in a corner and we have to win as many games as we can,” said Isles veteran defenseman Johnny Boychuk after amassing a goal, an assist and finishing with a plus-5 rating in the win over the Flames. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
