~BISHOP’S CROOK LAMPPOST MAY HAVE SPARED LIVES IN BROOKLYN HEIGHTS CAR CRASH: A man driving a gray 2005 GMC Envoy smashed into an early 20th century style “bishop’s crook” lamppost, leaving it tilting precariously, on Montague Street in Brooklyn Heights at roughly 1:15 p.m.on Monday. Pedestrians filled the sidewalk near TD Bank during the busy lunch hour. “Thank goodness he ran into the lamppost,” a man working outside at that time told the Brooklyn Eagle. “If he had driven onto the sidewalk he might have killed someone.” While a witness said that the driver, who was conscious and speaking, was removed to an ambulance on a stretcher, an NYPD officer on the scene said there were no injuries. If so, the driver was extremely lucky. The windshield of the car directly above the steering wheel was cracked in a large-spider-web pattern. An NYU Langone ambulance and several police cars were on the scene. Because of fears that the crazily-tilting lamppost would fall down completely, a nearby newsstand was evacuated and a section of the sidewalk was taped off. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~NOXIOUS ODOR LEADS TO LOCKDOWN OF TWO FLOORS AT BROOKLYN SUPREME COURT: One person was rushed to Brooklyn Hospital and two others refused medical attention after the Kings County Supreme Court, Civil Term, received a letter that contained a noxious odor on Mondaymorning. Court officials said that a letter was delivered to the chambers of Justice Lawrence Knipel, administrative judge for the courthouse. The piece of mail did not contain a powder, but did contain a noxious odor. NYPD later announced that the court was clear and that no harmful substances were found. At press time, there was no update on the identity of the person taken to the hospital, but an official did point out that Knipel was not in his chambers at the time the letter was found and is doing fine. New York City Department of Environmental Protection was on the scene to secure the letter and get samples, which NYPD transported to a lab. The courthouse itself never went into lockdown. A court employee told the Brooklyn Eagle, however, that floors eight and 11 were initially closed, but were reopened by 3 p.m. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~CHECK OUT FRESH PICS OF BROOKLYN BRIDGE PARK’S PIER 3:Workers are busily installing landscaping, hardscaping and other features at Pier 3, the final unfinished pier at Brooklyn Bridge Park. When the 5-acre pieropens this summer, it will bring the Brooklyn Bridge Park project to 90 percent completion, the park said on Monday. As can be seen from the Brooklyn Heights Promenade, an acre of the large central lawn has already been sodded. Trees and shrubs will eventually be planted around the perimeter of the pier to provide protection from wind and sun. Some of the perimeter trees are already on site. One of the more intriguing elements of the pier will be a labyrinth garden made up of hedges of varying sizes, imaginative seating and interactive features like an echo game and walk-in kaleidoscope. A seating enclave by industrial designer Gunter Beltzig will be nestled into landscaping. The park says a “multipurpose hardscape” is also being installed, which will be used for events. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~CITY TO FIX STREET WHERE MOTORIST STRUCK KIDS: After immediate public outrage following an ill motorist running a red light and killing two young children on Ninth Street in Park Slope, the city announced it will redesign the road. The new design will include protected bike lanes and other safety measures, the Department of Transportation said. While the city agency is committed to the fix-up, advocates urged for more preemptive solutions. “The city has gotten good at applying innovative street design, but fallen short of installing it everywhere that it’s needed,” Paul Steely White of Transportation Alternatives said. “People will still make mistakes and there will be reckless drivers, but with better street design, they will result in fender benders and not funerals.” DOT said it will begin work as soon as “weather permits.” (via New York Post)

~NEW MODERN CLASSIC MEXICAN ON MYRTLE: Clinton Hill’s stretch of Myrtle Avenue recently got a new eatery that seeks to connect the old with the new. Ojala Restaurant at 413 Myrtle Ave, between Vanderbilt and Clinton, opened on Feb. 18 with a menu that calls upon classic Mexican cuisine to meet a modern take. The restaurant offers brunch, lunch and dinner seven days a week. The address Ojala landed at has seen multiple restaurants open and close up shop in short times, including Cultura Pan Latin Cooking and GB Crown Tavern. (via Brownstoner)
