The public on Thursday night got a preview of TechShop Brooklyn, a 20,500-square-foot shared advanced manufacturing center at the Brooklyn Army Terminal (BAT) in Sunset Park that will open for business on Oct. 30.

TechShop Brooklyn is expected to create up to 500 jobs and support more than 200 companies within the first five years, according to its sponsor, the New York City Economic Development Corp. (NYCEDC). Members will achieve access to 3-D printers, laser cutters, plastics and electronics labs, a machine shop, a woodshop, a metalworking shop, a textiles department and more.

TechShop also will host educational opportunities such as safety training, artist workshops, skill-building classes and youth-oriented STEAM education. In addition, it will provide 100 free memberships to community residents each year.

“Our borough is proud to now be home to our city’s largest advanced manufacturing center, affirming Brooklyn’s central role as a 21st-century industrial hub. We are building high-quality jobs for today and tomorrow in Sunset Park, with a continued attentiveness to ensuring economic development is inclusive and supportive of the surrounding community,” said Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams.

“We welcome the NYCEDC’s addition of TechShop Brooklyn to Sunset Park’s manufacturing base. This fits in with our strong belief in responsible development that benefits and offers opportunities to the community at large,” said Councilmember Carlos Menchaca (D-Red Hook-Sunset Park).

Earlier this year, NYCEDC announced BAT’s first advanced manufacturing start-up, Lowercase NYC, a company using 21st-century techniques such as robotics to create high-end eyewear. Last year, the agency unveiled a food manufacturing hub at the BAT Annex Building, which now houses Konery, a hand-rolled waffle cone maker; MOMO Dressing, a family-owned Japanese salad dressing company; Salty Road, a salt-water taffy company; and City Saucery, a family-owned Italian sauce and condiment.

TechShop Brooklyn is part of NYCEDC’s Futureworks NYC initiative, aimed at growing the advanced manufacturing sector.
