ON THIS DAY in 1912 the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Titanic Lookout Sighted Iceberg.” The article focused on findings in an investigation of the Titanic tragedy.

“Frederick Fleet, who was lookout in the crow’s nest of the Titanic on the night she foundered, testified at the investigation into the disaster today that on Sunday night some time after 10 o’clock he reported a black mass of ice ahead to the officers on the bridge,” the Eagle reported. The lookout said the ship would have been saved, he thinks, if he had had lookout glasses.
