ON THIS DAY in 1913, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Steel Plant Stops Work for the Navy.” The article focused on a foundry being closed down at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
“What was interpreted by the men as part of the Federal proposal to move the Brooklyn Navy Yard to New Jersey was the shutting down today of the steel plant in the local yard,” the Eagle reported.  “Seventy men were discharged without any explanation whatever, and the discontinuance of the plant will affect hundreds of other men — machinists, mechanics and skilled laborers.”
