ON THIS DAY in 1914, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published a World War I War Summary.  “A battle of extraordinary severity is raging at the western end of the Anglo-French and German battle line in the region of Noyon, 60 miles to the north of Paris, where the French still are striving to outflank General von Kluck’s reinforced army,” the Eagle reported.  “The French official statement issued this afternoon claims that the allied troops have made a slight advance between the River Olse and Soissons…”

JOHNNY APPLESEED was born on this day in 1774.  Born as John Chapman, he planted orchards and was regarded as a medicine man by the Indians.

GEORGE GERSHWIN was born in Brooklyn on this day in 1898.  Gershwin was an American composer remembered for “The Man I Love,” “Strike Up the Band,” “I Got Rhythm” and more.  Many of his works were in collaboration with his brother, Ira.

HUG A VEGAN DAY is today.  If you are already a vegan, be sure to remind others of this vegan-recognizing day.  This recognized holiday is annually on the last Friday in September.

WE THE PEOPLE: The Citizens of NYCHA in Pictures and Words, hosted by the Brooklyn Historical Society, will be on exhibit starting today during regular gallery hours, noon to 5 p.m.  The exhibit debunks the varied stigmas and stereotypes applied to African Americans and Latinos residing in NYCHA housing. 

THE 21st ANNUAL BUS FESTIVAL will take place Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., hosted by the New York Transit Museum.  The trucks will be stationed at Boerum Place between State Street and Atlantic Avenue.  The event is free.
