CULTURE BRIEFS: Meet Miss Subways, ballet and more
MEET MISS SUBWAYS
Miss Subways was New York’s most iconic and democratic beauty contest. Young women of mostly middle and working class backgrounds were selected, not just for their looks, but for the aspirations and dreams they had for their futures.
From 1941 to 1976, their portraits and biographies were displayed in subway cars throughout the city, and thousands identified with them. Photographer Fiona Gardner and journalist Amy Zimmer have tracked down most of the living former Miss Subways to see how their lives turned out. To see their current and former portraits and hear their voices, take in an exhibition at the New York Transit Museum, 130 Livingston Street, that will last through May.
