SUNSET PARK — A SINKHOLE  on 41st Street caused basement flooding, stranding a family and costing thousands in repairs, News 12 reported Saturday. Caused by outdated pipelines, the issue resurfaced despite a recent 311 complaint, homeowners said. The NYC Department of Environmental Protection blamed a broken sewer connection on the homeowners, who dispute this, noting it’s a recurring block problem. Property owners are responsible for maintaining all of the plumbing inside and outside of their property, including their water and sanitary sewer service lines that extend from their property to the city’s water and sewer mains in the street.

Inexpensive service line insurance — costing roughly $100 a year for private homes through the American Water Resources company, endorsed on the NYC website — can save homeowners tens of thousands of dollars in repair bills.
