Protest Planned for Boro Park Raises Tensions

BOROUGH PARK — AN ANTI-ISRAEL PROTEST is planned for Tuesday evening in Borough Park. Organized by protest group PAL-Awda, the demonstration opposes an event known as the Israel Real Estate Expo, held by broker firm the Getter Group. PAL-Awda described the expo as illegal, and charged its organizers with “selling land in occupied Palestine.”
While previous Israeli real estate events have drawn controversy and accusations of criminality over listing properties for sale in the West Bank, which is internationally considered illegally occupied, Getter’s online promotion for the event does not appear to have any West Bank settlements among a list of cities advertised, which are all in recognized Israeli territory.
According to the Times of Israel, local officials, including assemblymembers Simcha Eisenstein and Kalman Yeger, have called for a police presence, citing concerns over harassment, as Borough Park has a large Orthodox Jewish community. While community leaders have expressed worry over rising tensions and antisemitism, PAL-Awda says its intention is only to protest the expo, and that many Jews will protest with them – although in another post, the group allegedly called on demonstrators to “Flood Borough Park” to stop the event, a possible reference to the events of Oct. 7, 2023.
The protest is at 3611 14th Ave. at 6 p.m. The expo’s venue has been changed to an undisclosed location.
