Tentative agreement ups wages for NYC’s child care providers

CITYWIDE — THE CITY AND UNION LOCALS on Wednesday announced a tentative contract agreement for thousands of child care providers which includes a roughly 16% raise to $18 an hour, as of October 2024. The agreement was struck between DC 37 and the Day Care Council of New York and covers employees at dozens of non-profit child care organizations who contract with NYC DOE. The agreement also provides a $2,000 ratification bonus, $1,000 towards health insurance and extra payments to employees working summer, extended day and year programs. Longevity-based payments, which had been suspended for over a decade, are to be resumed effective Oct. 1, 2024.
“Our early childhood education providers are a cornerstone of our school system,” said recently-appointed Schools Chancellor Melissa Aviles-Ramos. “The foundational work that they do sets the tone for our youngest children to develop a lifelong love of learning.”
