BALTIMORE — ‘Carpe griseo’: Jaime Torres, atop Seize The Grey, reacts after crossing the finish line to win the Preakness Stakes horse race at Pimlico Race Course, Saturday, May 18, 2024, in Baltimore. The Belmont Stakes, held in Elmont, New York, this year on June 7, will be the third in the Triple Crown.

The three-year-old thoroughbreds, usually “fillies” or female racehorses under four years old, have to win all three races to earn the Triple Crown.

BOSTON — The energy of a 3-pointer, the resignation of a defender: Boston Celtics guard Jaylen Brown (7) puts up a 3-point shot to score and ties the game against the Indiana Pacers with seconds left in Game 1 of the NBA Eastern Conference basketball finals, Tuesday, May 21, 2024, in Boston. The Celtics, in a surprise ending, beat the Pacers 133-128 in overtime. Rick Carlisle, one of the leading coaches in pro basketball, took the blame for his Pacers’ loss, telling the news media that, with a three-point lead over Boston with 10 seconds left in regulation timing, he should have pursued a different strategy. The two teams play again Thursday at 8 p.m.

The Celtics (64-18) lead the NBA Eastern Conference. The Indiana Pacers currently rank 6th, with a 47-35 record.

IOWA — Nature’s revenge — nothing stops the wind: Damaged cars sit piled up next to a road after a tornado Tuesday, May 21, 2024, in Greenfield, Iowa, practically destroying this town about 60 miles southwest of Des Moines. The tornado, which had multiple vortices, is blamed for killing at least 60 people, injuring dozens, and damaging a hospital.

The tornado, which was part of a severe storm system that barreled through the Midwest on Tuesday, gained notoriety for destroying several wind turbines in neighboring Adams County, even though this renewable energy infrastructure was designed and constructed to withstand severe weather.

VATICAN — High-level assistant practices ‘wind control’ while the Pope reads an important message: Pope Francis holds his weekly general audience in St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican, Wednesday, May 22, 2024. On this day, Pope Francis concluded his cycle of catechesis on “Vices and Virtues,” focusing on the theme of humility, with the scripture reference from Luke 1:46-48, chronicling Mary proclaiming her praise for God in what has become the Magnificat, one of the eight oldest canticles of the Church.

The “Magnificat” is the prime canticle for the feast of the Visitation of Mary to her cousin Elizabeth. The Church observes the Visitation feast day each year on May 31.

IOWA — Nature’s revenge — High winds exceed calibration: The remains of a tornado-damaged wind turbine touch the ground in a field, Tuesday, May 21, 2024, near Prescott, Iowa, in the state’s southwestern portion. The tornado, which hit just before 3 p.m. local time, destroyed several wind turbines, igniting them. The damage was all the more shocking, reports the New York Times, because the turbines are built to withstand severe weather and windstorms, with built-in mechanisms to lock and feather the blades, changing their angles when winds reach 55 miles per hour.

Iowa, which has thousands of wind turbines, has ranked second only to Texas in wind energy production. Unfortunately, weather disasters are increasing in the Midwest.
