OMAHA — Nature’s revenge — rainclouds get more dramatic, more damaging: A severe thunderstorm hits Omaha, NE, on Wednesday, June 12, 2024. This massive storm cloud was spotted all over Omaha, with viewers of that city’s ABC network affiliate KETV sending dramatic photos. The storm also produced golf-ball-sized hail in some areas, pictures of which viewers also sent to KETV. However, no tornadoes were reported.

A massive tornado that touched down in suburban Omaha on Friday, April 26, damaged hundreds of homes and ravaged farmland in suburban and rural Omaha and was part of an outbreak that spread into Iowa to the east.

GERMANY — A sober, moving momentary image at the soccer game: A Ukrainian war veteran with a leg prosthesis watches players of Ukraine’s national soccer team during a public training session in Wiesbaden, Germany, Thursday, June 13, 2024, ahead of their Group E match against Romania at the Euro 2024 soccer tournament. Being able to play in the Euro 2024 has also been a testament to Ukraine’s team, which has had to deal with air-raid siren disruptions, reports the Associated Press. Players compete in a spirit of duty to spread the word about Ukraine internationally. “It’s not only about football now,” defender Illia Zabarnyi said in a recent interview.

Teams competing in Group E include Belgium, Slovakia, whose president has opposed military aid for Ukraine, and Romania. Ukraine shares a border with two of its fellow Group E countries — Romania and Slovakia.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Protective walls of a Republican retreat: Republican presidential candidate and former President Donald Trump waves as he departs the Capitol Hill Club, Thursday, June 13, 2024, in Washington. Trump made his first appearance at Capitol Hill since the Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection, aiming to whip up Republican leaders in both chambers of Congress. Trump, who was the celebrity at a closed-door GOP breakfast, got feted for his birthday and was gifted with a baseball and bat from the annual Congressional baseball game.

Trump turns 78 on Friday, June 14, which the U.S. also marks as Flag Day.

FLORIDA — Nature’s revenge — entering an era of rethinking water management: Jim Comunale and Pam Mervos walk down Arthur Street as heavy rain floods the surrounding neighborhood on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, in Hollywood, Florida, a beachfront community situated between Fort Lauderdale in Broward County and Miami in Dade County. Meteorologists told the Associated Press that a disorganized storm system was pushing across the peninsula from the Gulf of Mexico as the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season begins. It was not expected to form a strong storm system once reaching the Atlantic Ocean, but it did dump heavy rainfall across Florida.

Southbound traffic had to be diverted around a flooded section of I-95 in Broward County, the major interstate artery that stretches northbound into New England.

What’s the significance of the sunflower seeds? They are a popular snack among MLB players.

ITALY — Keeping alliances alive: U.S. President Joe Biden arrives at a G7 world leaders summit at Borgo Egnazia, Italy, Thursday, June 13, 2024.

The G7 summit, running through Saturday, June 15, will focus on global conflicts, the spread of artificial intelligence, and issues involving emigration to the European continent from Africa, reports the Associated Press. Ongoing concerns such as climate change and China are also on the summit’s agenda.

An informal forum by structure, the G7 convenes an annual summit to discuss economic policy and security issues. The G7 member nations are Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States.

ITALY — Courtships are fun to watch, wherever they happen: Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, right, talks to Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as they attend the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment event at the G7 summit, Thursday, June 13, 2024, in Borgo Egnazia, Italy. The summit is being held against the backdrop of the European Parliament elections in which voters supported far-right parties and candidates in places like France and Germany (both G7 members). Although the leader of a far-right party, Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni continues to support centrists, particularly on foreign policy. She is considered to be “a reassuring transatlantic partner amid Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza,” reports the Associated Press.

The international community views Meloni as a pragmatic ally. She has emerged as the most powerful right-wing leader in Europe, particularly at a recent Vox rally, alongside France’s Marine Le Pen, Hungary’s President Viktor Orbán and even U.S. pro-Trump Republicans.

ITALY — The courtship summit continues: British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, left, is welcomed by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni during a G7 world leaders summit at Borgo Egnazia, southern Italy, Thursday, June 13, 2024. Like Meloni and other European leaders, Sunak — who earned an advanced degree from Stanford University in the United States — as Prime Minister, leads Britain’s Conservative Party, which has been trailing in the polls. On Tuesday, he implored Conservative Party voters to back him in the July 4 elections.

Taking power during the 2010 financial crisis, the Conservative Party (also known as the Tories) will battle for the United Kingdom’s soul and direction on July 4, ironically the day one of its historical colonies declared independence in 1776.

SEATTLE — Don’t start the washing machines yet; more laundry coming in a moment: Seattle Mariners’ Mitch Haniger tries to avoid a dousing during the celebration of the team’s 2-1 win over the Chicago White Sox in 10 innings in a baseball game Wednesday, June 12, 2024, in Seattle. Haniger drove in the winning run. Haniger’s homer was a save in the wake of a missed chance to clinch the game in the ninth inning when Chicago White Sox center fielder Luis Robert, Jr.’s solo homer tied the game against the Mariners’ relief pitcher Mike Baumann. The two teams play each other on Thursday night.

The Seattle Mariners team tops the standings of the American League West with a 40-30 record. By contrast, the Chicago White Sox are at the bottom of the American League Central standings, with a dismal 17-52 record.
