Scholastic Roundup: For CHSAA girls’ all-stars, it’s a Sweet 16

For the Brooklyn CHSAA basketball all-stars – it is simply a Sweet 16.

Sixteen Brooklyn girls were tabbed to the all-star squad with three each from Bishop Loughlin and Xaverian on the Tier I squad with Nazareth Regional adding two.

Fontbonne Hall had three representatives on the Tier I team, followed by St. Edmund Prep and St. Saviour with two members each and Cristo Rey had a member on the squad.

The CHSAA Brooklyn All-Stars:

  • Kaylah Barr – Bishop Loughlin, senior guard, team captain averaged 14 points, seven rebounds and three assists per-game
  • Tamia Vines – Bishop Loughlin, sophomore guard, averaged 13 points, five assists, and four rebounds per-game
  • Dayia Anderson – Bishop Loughlin, sophomore guard, averaged 12 points, six rebounds and four assists per-game
  • Alex Carbonaro -Xaverian, junior guard, averaged 15 points-per-game, CHSAA Tier I All-League Second Team in 2022 and 2023
  • Grace Lanier – Xaverian, junior guard, averaged 15 points per-game, scored her 1,000th point this season;’ CHSAA Tier I All-League Second Team, 2022 and 2023
  • Callie Mullin- Xaverian, sophomore guard, averaged 10.5 points per-game
  • Makylah Moore – Nazareth Regional, junior guard, averaged 18 points and seven rebounds per-game; CHSAA Tier I All-League Second Team
  • Vanessa McManus – Nazareth Regional, senior guard, averaged 22 points and four rebounds per-game; CHSAA Tier I All-League, Third Team

Tier II All-Stars:

  • Noelle Polanco- Fontbonne Hall Academy, junior guard, averaged 18 points per-game; scored her 1,000th point this season, CHSAA Tier II All-League Third Team
  • Lucy Kuhlman- Fontbonne Hall Academy, sophomore guard, averaged 10 points per-game
  • Allie Wagner- Fontbonne Hall Academy, senior guard, averaged 11 points per-game
  • Mackenzie Palisi- St. Edmund Prep, junior guard, averaged 12 points and three assists per-game, CHSAA Tier II All-League Third Team
  • Priscilla Long – St. Edmund Prep, senior forward, averaged 10 points and seven rebounds per-game
  • Brielle Gardner- St. Saviour, freshman guard, CHSAA Tier IV All-League First Team
  • Hannah Flanders – St. Saviour, junior forward, team captain, CHSAA Tier IV All-League First Team
  • Amnerys Taveras – Cristo Rey, junior guard, team captain, 5.3 points and three rebounds per-game

The LIU women’s lacrosse team bid farewell to 12 student-athletes on Senior Day ahead of the Sharks’ 7-6 victory against Merrimack at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium, Saturday.

Rachel Weber propelled LIU to a 5-4 lead in the third quarter, finishing the game with two goals. Pierson Schuchart broke a five-all tie in the fourth quarter finding the back of the net and granting LIU a 6-5 lead.

Kelly Bergersen, Lily Bilello, Alexa Cohen, Olivia Fantigrossi, Alexa Fusco, Jen Gaffney, Catherine Robles, Gina Toscano, Brianna Tribble, Rachel Weber and Amanda Weber were honored during Senior Day festivities.

The LIU women’s tennis team clinched its second consecutive NEC Championship Sunday with a 4-2 victory over FDU at the Mercer County Tennis Center.

Leo Boisseau and Lucy Garrigues, the top doubles pair for the Sharks, secured a 6-1 win. Following their lead, Saki Oyama and Kate Jorjolkiani won 6-3.

Clara Tardivel and Mia Tsoukalis completed the doubles success with a 5-3 win.

The LIU women’s water polo team completed its regular season in impressive fashion, defeating Villanova, 15-13 and LaSalle, 19-8, Saturday.

Paola Dominguez-Castro led the team with 10 goals in two matches while Sydney deVroedt was a defensive standout, recording seven field blocks against LaSalle.

The Sharks finished the 2024 season with a record of 22-6, 10-2 in MAAC play.

LIU acrobatics and tumbling finished its regular season on a high note. The Sharks beat Morgan State 240.535 to 220.050 and won all events, securing their sixth consecutive win.

Autumn Poppett, a senior pitcher on the St. Joseph’s University, Brooklyn softball team recorded her 100th career strikeout in the first inning – in game one of a doubleheader — a 3-0 win over Mount Saint Mary College, last week.

The Bears dropped the nightcap, 7-1.

Poppett, a native of San Diego, allowed four base runners through the first six innings.

Her milestone came two batters into the contest.

Just perfect – that’s exactly what the Pratt Institute women’s tennis team remained – 10-0 on the season —after edging out Stockton University, 5-4 Sunday afternoon at the USTA National Tennis Center.

Pallavi Verghese and Beatrice Crespo both were victorious at singles and doubles – Verghese and Crespo teamed-up in the lead doubles match and Nastazja Cancellaro and Julia Ognibene joined at No. 3 doubles, both tandems recording 8-5 victories that gave Pratt a 2-1 lead after the doubles session.

The Pratt Institute men’s tennis team snapped a two-game skid with a 7-2 road win over John Jay College at the Sportime Tennis Center on Randall’s Island last week.

Pratt (6-3) led 2-1 after doubles with Ryan Nelsen and Calder Tillinghast teaming up for an 8-3 win in the No. 2 position and Caleb Callahan and Shrenik Mahaveer winning at love, 8-0, in the No. 3 spot.

Callahan also won at love, 8-0, in the singles session at No., 6 and Eagle Zhang and Nelsen both collected 8-1 victories at No. 3 and No. 4 respectively. Mikah Liu scored an 8-2 triumph in the No. 2 spot and Tillinghast collected an 8-3 win in the No. 5 spot.

Hannah Kim won the women’s discus for the second-straight week as the Pratt Institute women’s and men’s track and field team competed in The College of New Jersey Invitational, Saturday afternoon.

Kim’s throw of 38.22 meters bested the field of 41 and was the 89th best toss in Division III this year. She also collected a 19th-place finish in the shot with a throw of 9.63 meters.

Giovanna Lisa nabbed second in the 3000-meter steeplechase, lowering her time to 13:47.46.

Asa Brandyberry was the top men’s finisher in 17th in the discus throw with a toss of 34.26 meters and scored 22nd in the shot put with 11.02 meters.

Brooklyn College freshman infielder, Jelisa Palenque, was named the City University of New York Athletic Conference’s Softball Rookie of the Week, and junior pitcher Danielle Guzzardi, earned Honorable Mention accolades. The duo helped Brooklyn to a 2-2 split on the week.

Hitting .444 in four games played, Palenque went three-for-three with a pair of doubles and a homer, driving in four runs in Brooklyn’s 11-0 non-conference win over Yeshiva last week.  She currently leads the Bulldogs in extra-base hits.

Pitching every inning of all four of Brooklyn’s games on the week, Guzzardi threw a five-inning perfect game in Game 1 against Yeshiva and a no-hitter in Game 2. She struck out nine batters in each game against the Maccabees, leading the Bulldogs to a 12-0 win in Game 1 and an 11-0 victory in Game 2. She closed out the week with a 3.18 ERA.

Brooklyn College junior Ryan Sham (Brooklyn Tech) claimed Honorable Mention for the week in men’s tennis announced by the CUNYAC. It is Sham’s third weekly honor this season – he was named Player of the Week twice.

Helping Brooklyn to a 2-0 mark on the week, including a 6-3 CUNYAC win over Hunter, Sham went 2-0 at top-flight singles and 2-0 at the No. 1 spot in singles.
