Our world in photos: April 19
INDIA — Proof of life — the life of a democracy, that is: An elderly woman shows an indelible ink mark on her finger after casting a vote at a women-only booth during the first round of polling of India’s national election in Doda district, Jammu and Kashmir, India, Friday, April 19, 2024. The voting takes place in several rounds over the next few weeks, with round two occurring next Friday, April 26. This hugely significant election, which thus far has brought out almost 970 million voters in one of the world’s most populous nations, is a referendum on the current prime minister, Narendra Modi, who is seeking a rare third term. Considered a populist, Naendra has espoused Hindu nationalist views that many Indian Muslims assert have harmed them.
Voters will also elect 543 members to the lower house of Parliament for five years. This staggered election concludes on June 1.
GREECE — Don’t ever forget — soccer players have the most muscular legs: Brugge’s Ferran Jutgla scores the opening goal of his team against PAOK during the Europa Conference League quarter-final second leg soccer match between PAOK and Club Brugge at Toumba stadium in the northern port city of Thessaloniki, Greece, Thursday, April 18, 2024. PAOK Thessaloniki, or simply PAOK, is a Greek professional football club based in Thessaloniki, Macedonia (which is different from North Macedonia, which was part of the former Yugoslavia). Club Brugge is a Belgian soccer club.
Club Brugge won Thursday’s match 2-0 and now progresses to the semifinals. The Belgian team will play its first leg against Molde, a football club from the western coastal town of Molde in Norway, on May 2.
CAPRI ISLAND — King of Air Miles — goes to peaceful conferences and visits warzones with equal aplomb: U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken leaves after meeting the journalists in a press conference at the G7 Foreign Ministers meeting on Capri Island, Italy, Friday, April 19, 2024. The G7 (Group of 7) nations are the U.S., Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy and Japan; the High Representative of the European Union is also participating. The G7 conference has been focused on the conflict between Israel and Iran, with the latest barrage of airstrikes having happened early Friday.
The G7 also had admonitions for both Israel and Hamas: to avoid further escalating the humanitarian crisis and to release the hostages, respectively.
THE WOODLANDS — Another links lassie on the ‘beach’ without any thought of a bathing suit: Gabriela Ruffels, of Australia, hits from the bunker on the fourth green during the second round of the Chevron Championship LPGA golf tournament Friday, April 19, 2024, at The Club at Carlton Woods, in The Woodlands, Texas. The 24-year-old Ruffels is an Australian-American pro golfer who actually started her athletic career as a tennis player — at age eight. She won 21 International Tennis Federation doubles events in Europe and was the number one ranking Australian junior at age twelve. She played on the USC (University of Southern California) golf team in college.
Since turning to professional golf in 2021, Ruffels has won three titles in 2023 at the Carlisle Arizona Women’s Golf Classic, Garden City Charity Classic and Four Winds Invitational and finished first in the Epson Tour’s Race for the Card.
INDONESIA — Nature’s revenge — the hot liquid bowels of the Earth cause evacuation: This photo provided by the Indonesian National Search and Rescue Agency (BASARNAS) shows a view of an eruption of Mount Ruang on Sulawesi Island, Indonesia, Friday, April 19, 2024. More people living near the erupting volcano on Indonesia’s Sulawesi Island were evacuated on Friday due to the dangers of spreading ash, falling rocks, hot volcanic clouds and the possibility of a tsunami. Sulawesi Island is part of the Indonesian archipelago and is located just east of the Makassar Strait from Borneo. The island is apportioned into north, central and western segments. The erupting volcano is in the northern portion.
The eruption has generated lightning of its own — static electricity from colliding ash clouds, according to Indonesia’s Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation.
PAUL — The Wild West of hockey — tripping, hip checks and elbows to the face are indiscretions that fans have come to expect: Minnesota Wild right wing Mats Zuccarello (36) trips Seattle Kraken center Yanni Gourde, front, during the second period of an NHL hockey game Thursday, April 18, 2024, in St. Paul, Minn. Zuccarello was penalized for tripping. A tripping penalty occurs when one player intentionally trips another player — usually from the opposing team — to impede their progress anywhere on the ice, not always during a scoring chance. A player uses his stick, body or arm to impede another’s progress.
The punishment for “tripping” is a two-minute penalty box visit and, in some cases, a penalty shot for the tripped player. Glaringly deliberate tripping or contact with another player’s body is considered a major penalty.
MANHATTAN — ‘Let the record show — at this table, my angry demeanor will not change…’: Former President Donald Trump appears at Manhattan criminal court in New York, Friday, April 19, 2024. However, anger apparently was not contained to the courtroom. News broke Friday afternoon that a man had set himself aflame in a park across from the courthouse. He was doused, and emergency workers rushed him away in a stretcher, reports the Associated Press. The park has served as a gathering point for news reporters covering the jury selection and for protesters. No word yet on the man’s motive for igniting himself or whether he supports Trump.
As of Friday afternoon, all 18 jurors had been selected and seated. The trial begins Monday morning.
BERGAMO — ‘Can’t grab the ball, but I can damn sure grab you!’ Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate fights for the ball with Atalanta’s Gianluca Scamacca, left, during the Europa League quarterfinal, second leg, soccer match between Atalanta and Liverpool at the Stadio di Bergamo, in Bergamo, Italy, Thursday, April 18, 2024. Liverpool has been eliminated from the tournament, despite having won a second-leg win (1-0) over Atalanta, because the British team failed to overcome a three-goal deficit.
Atalanta reached the semi-finals 3-1 on aggregate and will play the French team Marseille on Thursday, May 2.
FRANCE — Fighting for the ball on hands and knees: Lille’s Bafode Diakite, right, and Aston Villa’s John McGinn fight for the ball during the Europa Conference League quarter-final second leg soccer match between Lille and Aston Villa at the Pierre Mauroy stadium in Villeneuve d’Ascq, northern France, Thursday, April 18, 2024. Aston Villa won 4-3 on penalties in Leg 2 of the quarter-finals and will play Bournemouth, a pro football (soccer) club based near Dorset, England.
Lille is in northeastern France, near the Belgian border. Aston Villa is a soccer team based in Aston, which is part of the greater Birmingham area in England.
