Montague Street in Brooklyn Heights was transformed into Pickleball courts on Sunday for the first-ever Montague Street Open tournament. Three temporary regulation courts (plus one smaller one for kids) were set up on the street as part of the holiday weekend’s Open Streets event sponsored by the Montague BID and the Brooklyn Heights Association.
Pickleball combines elements of badminton, tennis and ping-pong, and has taken the country by storm. The rules of the game were posted on the street for beginners, including the intriguing, “Stay out of the kitchen!”
The BID and BHA outwitted the weekend’s rain by shifting the Open Streets activities to Sunday. The organizations hope the tournament will turn into an annual event.
