DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN — FDNY rushed to the Brooklyn War Memorial in Cadman Plaza Park on Wednesday morning at roughly 9 a.m. after smoke was seen pouring from the roof. The monumental building honors roughly 11,500 heroic Brooklyn residents who fought and died in World War II.

Firefighters from Ladder Company 110 climbed to the Memorial’s roof as other firefighters inspected the building, which also contains NYC Parks Department and Cadman Park Conservancy offices.

FDNY Battalion Chief Sean Danis determined that the smoke was issuing from a boiler which was being cleaned that morning by building staff. After the boiler was shut down, the smoke disappeared.

The building is in the midst of renovations including ramps and an elevator, which will make the Memorial’s interior hall (currently closed to the public) wheelchair accessible.
